When you type “Cortal” into a search engine, you come across customer reviews dating back to the 2000s, frozen pages, and little clear explanation of what has become of this bank. Cortal, however, played a significant role in online brokerage in France before disappearing as a brand. Understanding its journey helps to know where the services it offered are today and which solutions to turn to for managing savings and investments.

Cortal and Cortal Consors: a pioneering online brokerage bank in France

Initially, Cortal’s offering focused on savings products accessible to individuals.

Over the years of the 1990s, the bank gradually adopted Minitel, fax, and then telephone to allow its clients to place orders remotely. This model without a physical branch was innovative at the time. Cortal foreshadowed the operation of today’s online banks.

The merger with Consors, a German broker, gave birth to Banque Cortal Consors, a subsidiary of BNP Paribas specializing in brokerage and savings for individuals. The entity then operated in France, Germany, and Spain.

Merger with Hello bank!: why Cortal Consors no longer exists

You may still have an old account statement stamped Cortal Consors. Since November 2015, this brand has no longer had an independent commercial existence. The operational merger with Hello bank! was finalized on November 16, 2015. The activities and client accounts were transferred to BNP Paribas’s digital platform.

This absorption is not just a simple name change. Hello bank! took over the clientele, the savings products, and part of the stock market offering of Cortal Consors. Former clients received new identifiers and now access a unified interface, with standard banking services in addition to brokerage.

What happened to Cortal Consors stock and PEA accounts?

The PEAs and securities accounts opened at Cortal Consors have been migrated to the BNP Paribas or Hello bank! offerings. Custody fees, order pricing, and access conditions have changed in the process. If you were a client, your assets have not disappeared, but the fee schedules applied today are those of BNP Paribas.

The old customer reviews of Cortal Consors no longer reflect the current conditions. The testimonials found online often date back to the period 2003-2010 and concern trading software (Trader Home Line, Trader Pro) and package offers that no longer exist.

BNP Paribas brokerage offer after Cortal: what has changed for individuals

Today, online brokerage for individuals within the BNP Paribas group goes through two main channels:

  • In France, the PEA and ordinary securities account (CTO) offerings are provided directly by BNP Paribas, with a pricing repositioning under regulatory constraints.
  • In Germany, the historical brand has been renamed Consorsbank, still a subsidiary of BNP Paribas, with its own range of stock products.
  • Hello bank!, in France, retains an online brokerage offer inherited from Cortal Consors, integrated into a broader banking package (current account, card, savings).

Pure brokerage in the style of Cortal no longer exists as an isolated service. It is now part of a comprehensive banking offer.

Pricing and fees: a point of caution

Former Cortal Consors clients appreciated packages like the “Trader Pack” or the “Unlimited” offer that allowed for a large number of orders for a monthly fee. These packages have been discontinued.

The current pricing schedules of BNP Paribas for online brokerage work differently. Fees depend on the order amount and the targeted market (Euronext Paris, foreign markets). It is advisable to compare these fees with those of other online brokers before opening a CTO or PEA.

Cortal customer reviews: how to interpret the testimonials found online

The databases of reviews on Cortal contain several hundred testimonials. On a specialized site, for example, there are 248 reviews. The majority of this feedback pertains to the period 2003-2005, during the Cortal-Consors merger and the transfer of portfolios from B*Capital.

These reviews mention order placement software, levels of telephone service, and pricing offers that have all been replaced. Reading these testimonials provides a historical overview, not a buying guide.

  • Critiques on the complexity of portfolio transfers during successive mergers.

To form a relevant opinion on current solutions, it is better to consult recent feedback on Hello bank! or on the stock offering of BNP Paribas.

Current solutions for your finances after the end of Cortal

If you are looking to recapture the spirit of Cortal, meaning an online brokerage offer with contained fees and an autonomous interface, several options coexist. Hello bank! remains the direct successor for former clients. Other online brokers offer comparable offers, sometimes with more competitive rates on low-value orders.

The choice depends on the volume of orders you place each month. An occasional investor does not have the same needs as an active trader who used to place dozens of orders through Cortal Consors’s old Unlimited package.

The Cortal brand has ceased to exist, but the financial products it distributed (PEA, CTO, mutual funds) remain available under other brands of the BNP Paribas group. The offer has changed its name and pricing conditions, but not its nature.
